The Way Home

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
    It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
    like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
    and makes its circuit to the other;
    nothing is deprived of its warmth
  Psalm 19:1-6

In all thy ways acknowledge [the Lord], and he shall direct thy paths.
- Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)

Here in a rural part of Texas, especially during the summer months when the skies are clear, I can watch the universe put on a show all night long. Over the days and months, I notice that every star and planet appears to be slowly but steadily moving in the sky — with one exception. No matter what time of night or what time of year, the North Star is always in the same position, providing a guiding light for those who have lost their way in the darkness. Even in this age of GPS tracking, I still find comfort in knowing that the North Star is always there to show me the way home.

  Like the night sky, life constantly changes; and if we are not careful, we can easily get lost in the darkness. If we don’t have something or someone on whom we can depend, we may never get where we want to go in life. Instead, we wander from one point to the next, always moving but never going anywhere. No matter how dark our life becomes, God’s word is the guiding light that keeps us on the right path. We can follow God’s light, and God will lead us home.

Thought for the Day

No matter how far we may stray, God is always with us to show us the way.

Prayer

Dear God, when we are lost and searching, show us the right path to follow and guide us home. Amen.
